I had some odd dreams last night. Normally I don’t remember my dreams so when I do I’m often left shaking my head.

Dream #1

I was back at Pixar. I was in line for lunch at the cafe talking with my friend CB. Normally there is a modest line for the cafe, but in the dream the line was snaking all over the building, past people’s cubes, through some offices, and outside for a bit. I don’t remember the conversation CB and I were having, but at some point people started carrying neon colored Model Ts around. CB stopped talking, picked up a bright pink Model T, carried it around a group of people, put it down, and came back into line. That’s when I woke up.

Dream #2

[Redacted] 1

Dream #3

I was at a meeting in a civil building. We had gotten out and were walking down a hall. Firefighters were being called to supper by an alarm system with a flashing sign. Rather than a klaxon the sound was the Robot ringtone I use for alarms on my iPhone. It took about five minutes of the dream with that noise before I woke up and turned off the alarm. Also, I think Miley Cyrus was holding an elevator for me.

This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman who is a religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just “people of faith” but theocratic bullies. On Nov. 4, anyone who cares for the Constitution has a clear duty to repudiate this wickedness and stupidity.

Yesterday afternoon I was at home enjoying the remains of a great weekend with great weather with my girlfriend. I had talked to my mom a few hours earlier when they arrived back in Houston and were checking in with me. We talked about the weather and how things were going for them post-Ike.

At about 17.15 my phone rang and it was my sister. I had to tell her to calm down as I couldn’t understand her. She said they thought my dad was having a stroke and had collapsed. I made sure they had called 911 and then let her go to call the rest of the family in Houston. About 30 minutes later my phone rang again and it was my sister. They said the paramedics had worked on my dad and couldn’t resuscitate him.

I’m pretty shattered as this came very suddenly. I’ll carry on and help my mom with whatever she needs. I’m off to Houston for the memorial service on Friday @ 11am (not sure where it is yet).

If there is an afterlife I hope my dad is there and happy with my granddad and uncle amongst others.

See ya down the road dad.

Kenneth Dowell Weeks, October 17, 1950 - 21 September 2008

Update: The memorial service is at 11am on Friday the 26th of September at All Saints Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers please make a dontation to The Boy Scouts of America, The Girl Scouts of America, or the charity of your choice in my dad’s name.

Update 2: If you’re having trouble picking a charity it has been suggested that maybe the Red Cross would be a great place. They’re helping the people hit by Gustav and Ike.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over lousy fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average of the world’s great civilizations before they decline has been 200 years. These nations have progressed in this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to Complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependency; from dependency back again to bondage.” — Alexander Fraser Tyler, Cycle Of Democracy (1770)

I got on a motorcycle for the first time and learned the basic skills needed to ride safely on the road. I don’t yet have a motorcycle or the gear, but I plan on getting those in due time.

On a related note, my cousin David also took the rider course and got a sweet ride. I can’t wait to see (and ride?) it in person.
