Square Signals : KVO+Blocks: Block Callbacks for Cocoa Observers
Tuesday, August 25th, 2009Square Signals : KVO+Blocks: Block Callbacks for Cocoa Observers: “Andy
Matuschak.
Panther introduced Key-Value Observing, a Cocoa implementation of the observer pattern. It’s very useful, but the API kind of sucks.
To get observation notices, you have to override a lengthy selector (observeValueForKeyPath:ofObject:change:context:), provide a static context pointer, and essentially implement a big switch statement on the key path.
That’s unwieldy, but I think it also makes for unmaintainable code: the callbacks end up thrown in the same method, and they’re separated from the observer registration.
KVO+Blocks is an NSObject category I wrote which provides addObserverForKeyPath:task:, where the latter parameter is a block.
io9 – Michael Bay Finally Made An Art Movie
Friday, June 26th, 2009“It’s an assault on the senses, a barrage of crazy imagery. Imagine that you went back in time to the late 1960s and found Terry Gilliam, fresh from doing his weird low-fi collage/animations for Monty Python. You proceeded to inject Gilliam with so many steroids his penis shrank to the size of a hair follicle, and you smushed a dozen tabs of LSD under his tongue. And then you gave him the GDP of a few sub-Saharan countries. Gilliam might have made a movie not unlike this one.”

35 samples in 255 Seconds == Girl Talk song
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009I like Girl Talk. A biomechanical engineer that makes wicked mashups. Wired has a story on a song from the latest Girl Talk album, Feed The Animals. There are 35 samples in the song, expertly blended. Amazing.
The Betty – Kawasaki Vulcan 750
Sunday, May 10th, 2009I’ve been on the hunt for a motorcycle for a bit. Due to a confluence of events I was on the hunt for a bike this weekend. One popped up on Craigslist yesterday and I went to see it this morning. After a test ride and a little negotiation I am now the proud owner of a 1998 Kawasaki Vulcan 750. Her name is Betty. There are a couple of cosmetic things to take care of. The engine is in great shape and It has less than 7k miles on it.
I hadn’t been riding in the last few months so I was nerveous to get the bike home. I had nothing to worry about. I rode Betty the 25 miles on highways easily.

Friday, January 9th, 20092009: On to bigger and better things…
Friday, January 2nd, 2009The year of 2008 is over. For me the last year was full of ups and downs. I switched jobs to a more fulfilling role. I met my girlfriend, Jo. I also lost my dad. Like I said, ups and downs.
I’m really looking forward to 2009. Jo and I decided we want to get married. We don’t have a date set or any plans yet, but I’m super excited about it.
I’m also looking forward to moving forward more with iPhone development, hopefully I’ll have more news soon.
A happy new year to everyone and I hope your 2009 is looking good for you.
Motorcycle License
Tuesday, November 25th, 2008A few months ago I took the Motorcycle Safety Rider Course. The only thing left for me to do was go and get the class M1 added to my current drivers license. I tried on a Saturday but the California DMV has gone all wonky on the Saturday schedules.
Today I went down to take the written test and get my upgraded license. I didn’t realize I had to also re-take half of the normal driver test in addition to the full motorcycle test.
I ended up passing without missing one question on either test. Now it’s on to a helmet, jacket, pants, and then a motorcycle at some point.
Yippie!
